Death:  Nov. 15, 2003

Born 'Ethel Evelyn' to her parents, Sam L. and Lula (King) Auxier, she first appears in census records at the age of six months in the 1910 US census enumerated at Paintsville on April 22nd of that year.
She must therefore have been born on October 10th of 1909, as her parents were married in the last few days of 1908 and her mother disclosed to the census-taker that Evelyn was the only child she'd ever had.
Her family resided at Paintsville for some time before going to Thealka. By 1920 they were in Letcher County at Jenkins, and remained there until after the 1930 census.
By 1935, her father had left the coal industry and returned to farming. He had also taken his family west to Indiana, finally settling near Allenville in Switzerland County in time for the 1940 census.
Evelyn became a teacher and returned to Letcher County. She taught at the McRoberts grade school, and lived at the Teacher's Home which was across from the Missionary Baptist Church.
Her mother passed away in 1963, by which time Evelyn was living on her own at Neon. She became the second wife of Boyd Meade on June 30, 1978; it was her first marriage. Despite facing a number of health challenges, Evelyn survived her husband by a two decades.
