Ollie Edward Harris - Class Of 1942 VIEW PROFILE

Ollie Edward Harris, Jr., son of the late Ollie Edward Harris, Sr. and Grace Vanover Harris, was born March 28, 1924 and passed from this life February 28, 2011 at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Healthcare Center, being 86 years, 11 months of age at the time of his passing.
Ed attended elementary and high school in Jenkins, Kentucky. He answered his country's call in World War II, serving in the United States Army where he was a pilot of P51's and escorted bombers on their missions throughout the European Theater. Twice he was shot down by enemy fire, but lived to return to his family. He left his beloved Kentucky to find work in Detroit until he eventually joined the workforce of Bethlehem Steel back home in Jenkins. He served as Superintendent and a Mining Engineer. Upon retirement, Ed spent his time caring for his dog family including Mommy Puppy, Buster and Curly and reading and studying the Bible. He formed MMC, Inc. as a consulting and construction firm which continues under different owners today.
A member of the First Baptist Church in Jenkins, he designed the present day church building that is located on Main Street in Jenkins.
Ed leaves a wonderful, lasting legacy to his surviving family, extended family and friends as well as to the town of Jenkins he loved so dearly and was so proud to call "home."
Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Wanda Blake Harris; daughter, Edna Punkie Harris; two grandchildren: Cpl. Johua Harris and Ryan Hawkins; and two sisters: Madeline Kass and Midge Staver.
Survivors include: wife of 18 years, Martha; three sons: Robert and wife, JoAnn of Atlanta, Ga.; Durward A. Harris and wife Kelly of Vienna, Va.; Charlie and wife, Debbie, of Port Richey, Fla.; nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; one step daughter, Isannah Hawkins Lee of Lexington, Ky.; step son James Anthony Hawkins of Ash-camp, Ky.; one sister, Eva Jean Bailey of Melbourne Beach, Fla., and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Visitation for Ollie Edward Harris, Jr. will be Friday, March 4 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Carty Funeral Home in Jenkins with Services beginning at 7:30 p.m. with Harold Dean Kincer officiating. A concluding service will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 10 a.m.
