Thurman Hall Class of 1964

A Jenkins area man died Monday afternoon in a freak accident.

Jenkins Police Chief Adam Swindall said Thurman Leslie Hall, 65, of 554 Bentley Loop in Payne Gap, was helping his son hook a trailer to his Dodge Dakota truck, which was parked slightly on a hill. Swindall said there must have been a mechanical malfunction with the truck, which caused the vehicle to roll backward and run over Hall.

Hall was flown by helicopter to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. Swindall and Hall’s parents were neighbors. “He was a really good guy,” said Swindall. He had the best sense of humor of anyone I knew. He always had a diff erent joke to tell.”Swindall said Hall was often seen with his grandchildren by his side. Hall was a retired section foreman for Bethlehem Steel Corp. and also worked at Romak in Norton, Va. He was a deacon and song leader at People’s Baptist Church. Born at Dorton, he was a son of the late Rush Hall and Hattie Elkins, and a brother of the late Bobby Hall.

Surviving are his wife, Irma Lee Brown Hall; a daughter, Angela Shaffer and husband David, South Point, Ohio; a son, Craig Hall and wife Rebekah, Jenkins; two sisters, LaCretia Gaye Newsome, Pikeville, and Bonnie Johnson, West Virginia; two brothers, Willard Rush Hall, Talbott, Tenn., and Roger ‘Hunky’ Hall, Jenkins; and three grandsons, Seth, Allen, and Samuel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, November 5, at the People’s Baptist Church. Burial will take place in the Jenkins- Payne Gap Cemetery.
