After graduating from JHS, I spent a long time time in college. I have a BS degree in Botany from UK, and MS and Ph.D degrees in Botany and Plant Physiology from Rutgers. I spent some time as a Postdoc (at Savannah River Ecology Laboratory), Assistant Professor (Memphis), and Research Scientist (SREL again). Now I am an Associate Professor at Western Carolina University. I married Gary Wein, from North Tonawanda, NY, in 1980, and our son Mikel was born in 1990; he is a proud alum of UNC-Chapel Hill. We have been in western North Carolina since 2006. I teach and conduct research on how plant communities respond to disturbance; Gary is the executive director of the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust (he helps protect land); and Mikel is heading (he hopes) to grad school in ancient history and classical archaeology, with an emphasis on underwater archaeology. We return to the Jenkins area to visit family frequently.
